Braille and Technology: Empowering Literacy and Independence

Today, January 4th, is a very significant day in my life and, I am sure, also for hundreds of visually impaired people like me across the globe. You all might be wondering why, right? So, come with me on this journey where I will take you through the significance of this day.

On January 4th, 1809, in a small town named Coupvray, about 20 miles away from Paris, Sir Louis Braille, the inventor of Braille, was born. He and his two siblings lived with their parents, Simon-René and Monique, on three hectares of land and vineyard in the countryside. His father maintained a successful enterprise of leatherworking and making horse tacks. Louis Braille lost his eyesight in an accident while he was playing with some of the tools in his fathers shop. His parents tried hard to treat his eyes, but fate had other plans, and he became completely blind at the age of five. From here, a new beginning for Louis Braille started, and he became the "eye" to thousands of people like him across the world. What is Braille?

Braille is a tactile reading and writing system using raised dots. People with visual impairments read by touching and feeling these dots. Braille plays a very important role in the lives of visually impaired individuals as it opens doors to education and provides an opportunity for self-independence. It helps people read, understand, and enjoy reading. Although technology is advancing and the importance of Braille may be perceived as diminishing, it remains significantly important.

Importance of Braille

This is not to diminish the importance of technology or to criticize it. Rather, both Braille and technology have their own distinct roles and should be respected equally. In this tech-savvy world, let us explore how Braille and technology together have evolved and made life easier.

How Technology Enhances Braille

Traditionally, Braille was produced using a slate and a stylus or a Braille typewriter known as "Brailler". However, advancements in technology have modernized Braille in several ways:

  • Electronic Braille Displays: Electronic Braille Displays are devices that have a row of pins that move up and down to create Braille characters that allow users to read content from computers, smartphones, and tablets in Braille in an efficient and easier manner.
  • Braille Embossers: Braille Embossers help in creating Braille books, documents, and other materials by printing Braille on paper.
  • Braille Translation Software: Braille Translation software helps in translating text into Braille, which helps in producing and making available Braille materials.
  • Digital Braille Books: Digital Braille books are electronic files that can be read using a Braille display or can be printed using a Braille Embosser, which helps in providing access to a vast number of libraries.
  • Screen Readers with Braille Output: Screen readers are an assistive technology largely used by people with visual impairments to access computers. This software converts text into synthetic speech and Braille, enabling users to interact with computers effectively.

    Conclusion

    To conclude, Braille and technology go hand in hand. While Braille is important to create a base of education, technology is important to expand access to information. Braille helps in improving language skills and concentration, and technology makes life easier and creates job opportunities. Both Braille and technology are equally important in creating opportunities, awareness, and access to information. Therefore, it is not wrong to say, Together, Braille and technology illuminate the path to literacy, independence, and a more inclusive future.
